Moving Tips
Things to consider:
Prepare for the first night in your new home by packing essential items in a separate bag and carry it with you. Things that you should consider are items such as:
- Medication
- Snacks, Bottled Water
- Basic Utensils and dishes. Cups, paper plates, etc...
- Something simple to prepare to eat in case you can't, or don't want to unpack yet
- Toiletries
- Basic tools to reassemble furniture if we aren't going to do it for you
- Children's items; Baby food or your little one's favorite toy
- Pet items; Pet food
Packing:
- Items you will need:
- Boxes
- Packing Tape
- Bubble Wrap or Tissue paper
- Magic Marker
- Notes on wrapping:
- Wrap your breakables before packing them
- Don't use newspaper on anything that the ink my stain, instead use it for additional padding around already wrapped items
- Use linens or towels for additional padding with breakables
- When packing frangible items, label each box "FRAGILE" and try not to stack to much weight on top of them
- Pack well ahead of time
- Work one room at a time, give yourself plenty of time so you don't have to rush at the last minute
- Label your boxes, if we don't know what's in it when we move it we won't know where to put it in your new home
- Important items such as check books, legal documents and jewelry should be packed and taken with you instead of sending them on the truck
- Pack boxes full, but not overweight; If the box is to heavy it may split or the tape may not hold; If it's not full it may buckle under the weight of boxes on top
- When disassembling furniture, place nuts and bolts in a Ziploc bag and label it so you know what they go to
- When moving a water bed, empty it a day or two ahead of time if possible; this will greatly speed up the process
Pets:
- Make plans of where to keep your pet while we are at both your old and new home so it doesn't escape
- You should take your pet with you on the trip to your new home
- If your pet is not accustomed to travel in a car or plane; consult your veterinarian about medication or sedatives to ease your pet
- If your moving fish, your tank can not be moved full, remove some of the water from the tank to transport the fish in as to not shock them
- If you will be stopping on the way to your new home at a hotel, call ahead to make sure your pet is welcome
- Ensure you have a leash for your pet and have it on them before opening the car door so they don't run
- If you are moving out of state, check with your new state in regards to laws and regulations on your pet; also check with your veterinarian for a referral
